Red howler monkey

Rode brulaap - Red howler monkey

The red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) is a striking primate species that lives in the rainforests of South America. These monkeys are known for their loud, roaring call, which can be heard up to five kilometers away. This sound is produced by a specially adapted throat and vocal cords, and serves to mark territory and communicate with other groups.

Red howler monkeys have a reddish-brown coat and live mainly in trees, where they feed on leaves, fruits and flowers. They live in groups of about 10 to 15 individuals, consisting of both males and females and their young. Their social structure is complex and they show a lot of care for their offspring.

I share photos that I took in the Apenheul in 2017 and in 2024. There is a clear difference in the colors and light of the photos from 2017 and 2024. Different camera, different lens and a big difference in experience with photography,
